Things Men Can Do
To Promote Gender Equality
** Why should the reader care to challenge patriarchy / promote gender equality? **
Vision
I want this to become a resource hub which guides constructive action in service of gender equality.I aspire for the list to be a co-designed living document, with the capacity to evolve through ongoing community feedback. This site will host additional context and links to helpful resources.I aspire to be transparent, accountable, and accessible.
Notes
I intend for this list to be palatable to a wide audience, while highlighting a variety of meaningful actions.
It builds on The Gender Compass's assertion that "Any communications should take care to avoid fuelling anti-equality sentiment."This list is a branch off another which I regarded as unhelpfully polarising and ironically patriarchal.
Limitations
Ideally, everything about the list would be public; essentially a wiki. However, given the contentious topic, there is a risk of sabotage. So some moderation is necessary.I welcome constructive criticism and will endevour to engage with and publish good-faith feedback.
Frequently Asked Questions
You're right in noticing that the wording is directed toward cis, heterosexual men.
The trade-off of using inclusive language is that we'd risk not cutting through to the people whose privilege most shelters them from these issues.
Intersectionality is essential for social justice.
However it can be hard for a layperson to immediately see how racism, ableism, homophobia etc. are directly relevant to gender equality.
Introducing intersectionality in the first impression may risk undermining trust and squandering the opportunity to address these issues in deeper conversations later.
So for now, this list remains focused on things obviously relevant to gender equality. However if you have ideas for how to include intersectionality, let’s chat!
Definitely.
If you have an idea: either invite me for a coffee/call, or share it in the feedback form
